How time flies when you’re having fun! The 20 rounds of the 2009 Ma5da MX5 Championship season are complete; it only seems like five minutes since the Silverstone launch day back in March!
The season finale took place under unusually sunny skies at Brands Hatch circuit on the 12th September. An impressive turn out saw another full grid of over 30 identical MX5’s lining up for the final races of the year.
Following a strong season Tom Roche arrived at Brands with enough points to secure the championship title so long as he started both races, so a mistake free weekend was essential for him… no pressure then!
Qualifying was all about consistency; the top nine grid slots were identical for both races. Rob Boston was on a mission and qualified with double pole positions, he was clearly determined to get his first ever race win before the day was out.
Lining up beside him on the front row was an under the weather Jonathan Greensmith, followed by Tom Roche and Paul Sheard on row 2.
Race one saw a great start from Rob Boston and it all looked good for that maiden win, until the safety car was deployed obliterating his 3.4 second lead. After some choice words, Rob got his head together and a good restart ensured that his first ever race win was in the bag!
Jonathan Greensmith bought his car home in second place after a valiant fight and not before getting the fastest lap of the race. Tom Roche just snatched third place from Jonathan Blake in the closing stages, to give us a familiar podium for the penultimate race of the season.
Rob Boston stared race 2 from pole and it looked as though he might be on a winning streak, until another safety car period made for another tense restart. Some great dicing between Greensmith, Sheard and Roche, saw Greensmith make his way up to 2nd position in the final stages of the race.
On the last lap with the chequered flag in sight, Boston and Greensmith made contact, this ended Greensmith’s race in disappointment with his MX5 parked in the gravel trap. Boston escaped with some damaged bodywork but made it across the line to take his second victory of the day.
That left 2nd place open for Tom Roche, who was by now officially the 2009 Ma5da MX5 Champion! Jonathan Blake was bemused and delighted to finish on the podium for the first time this year, taking 3rd position in the final race of the season.
It has been an awesome season for the Ma5da MX5 Championship with massive grids, close racing and a great atmosphere… what more could you ask for! I would just like to say what a pleasure it has been working with everyone in the Ma5da paddock this season and the crew from AMG TV, I already can’t wait for 2010!
That’s not strictly all for this year though, as the Ma5da MX5 Autumn Championship is being held at Silverstone from Friday 2nd October. As a support event to the Britcar 500, this promises to be an exciting weekend with lots to see and do, so why not come along and join us!
